November 9

The goal of the Student Legislative Session is to encourage young leaders to pursue public service and to contribute to the solution of public problems.

Students heard from notable state-wide leaders like Victor Carrillo - Texas Railroad Commissioner, Talmadge Heflin - Executive Director of the Republican Party of Texas, Dr. Sarah Weddington - Author and University of Texas Professor, Boyd Richie - Democratic Party Chair, Marcelo Tafoya - L.U.L.A.C. Texas District 7 Director, and David W. Gardner - Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Our very own District 31 State Representative Ryan Guillen is one of a handful of state leaders who sponsor and initiate this annual state-wide event. These very civic-minded individuals helped make possible a very informative and valuable session on parliamentary procedure. It was presented by the former Deputy Parliamentarian of the House, Chris Griesel. The end result was that student leaders were able to sit and work in the very seat of power on the floor of the House Chamber in the State Capitol.

The young people walked away from this session at the end of the day left with an invaluable lesson on state government and with an indelible experience that will become part of their maturing process in the years to come. Representative Guillen encourages as many high school students from his District in Duval, Starr, Webb, and Zapata counties to take advantage of this great opportunity.
