HEALTH ADVISORY: High Influenza Activity

Parents:

As you are aware, there is high influenza activity in Texas. Benavides ISD is taking every precaution to help prevent the spread of the flu within our schools. BISD is working with our custodial staff and Aramark to keep our students healthy and safe. Currently, the custodial staff is providing a special cleanser to fight infections to be utilized, daily, on the surfaces and door knobs of the building. Last Monday, the classrooms were thoroughly cleaned with these solutions after all students had been dismissed. The custodial staff are working diligently every evening to ensure the classrooms are cleaned for our students every morning.

Attached is a letter from the HEALTH Department with ways you as a parent can help prevent the flu.

Make-Up Day for Loss of Instruction Time

Attention Parents and Students:

House Bill (HB) 2610, passed by the 84th Texas Legislature, amends Texas Education Code (TEC), §25.081, by striking language requiring 180 days of instruction and replacing this language with language requiring districts and charter schools to provide at least 75,600 minutes of instruction, including intermissions and recess. The bill also allows school districts and charter schools to add minutes as necessary to compensate for minutes of instruction lost due to school closures caused by disaster, flood, extreme weather conditions, fuel curtailment, or another calamity.

In reviewing our records for the required 75,600 minutes for school, we find we are short 470 minutes to meet that requirement. May 18th, 2018 is a scheduled Tutorial/Attendance day. We will be using this day as our make-up day for the loss of the 470 minutes of instruction.

Friday, May18th will be a regular school day for all students.

New State "Open Carry" Gun Law

The new state gun law, HB910, allowing licensed handgun owners to carry a handgun in an open manner, as long as the handgun is secured in a shoulder or belt holster, went into effect January 1.  So what does the implementation of this new law mean for schools and the overall safety of our students? First and foremost, both federal and state law prohibit citizens, including handgun license holders, from carrying firearms on the physical premises of a school building, including any grounds or building where school activity is taking place or on a school bus or other school passenger vehicle.

T.E.A. has also released A-F grades for Texas school districts. Benavides ISD received a D.

This measurement is not indicative of the amount of hard work that our teachers and students put in all year long. It is not indicative of the talent and potential that is possessed in our district by our students, teachers, and community. Benavides ISD will continue to implement and work on initiatives and strategies that leads towards building and fostering our academic growth.

For explanation of how T.E.A. arrived at the calculations go to TXschools.org

In the future, classes being honored will be in the following order:   0 & 1’s, 2 & 3’s, 4 & 5’s, 6 & 7’s, 8 & 9’s.  Next year, we will begin with honoring the graduating classes ending in 6 & 7 with others following in succession

If your child is attending summer school as a result of 1) not passing academic courses on his/her report card, 2) attendance issues, or 3) participation in Extended School Year, and End of Course (High School), please note that summer school is still required.

For additional information call (361) 256-3003 or your child’s summer school principal.

Benavides ISD Campuses in Compliance with Highly-Qualified Teacher Requirements

At the November 17, 2015 School  Board of Trustees Meeting, Adell Cueva, Acting Superintendent, reported that Benavides ISD was 98% Highly Qualified.

To be ranked as “highly-qualified” a teacher must meet three criteria: 1) full state certification, 2) bachelor’s degree or higher, and 3) demonstrated competency in a subject area.  The last criterion is verified by proving proficiency by taking the EXCET or TEXES exams that test content and competency at the Pre-Kindergarten through 6, and 6 through 12 grade levels. Waivers, general permits, and temporary credentials to do not count toward the “highly-qualified” rating.

Teachers must be “highly-qualified” in their core teaching areas that include the following subjects:  English, Language Arts/Reading, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Languages, Civics and Government, Economics, History, Geography, Arts.

The “highly-qualified” report will be posted online at www.benavidesisd.net under District Reports and will be available in print at the Human Resources office at the Administration Building, 106 W. School St. in Benavides.

Referrals for Gifted and Talented

Benavides ISD is now accepting referrals for students who may need Gifted/Talented Services for the school year.  This program is designed for students who exhibit intellectual and creative thinking abilities at an extraordinary level not normally served in the regular classroom.  Services are provided only upon identification of education needs of the student.  Parents, teachers, or other members of the community may nominate students for this program.  Anyone wishing to refer a student attending Benavides ISD in kindergarten through 12th grade this school year is asked to go by the student’s campus office and request a copy of the referral form.  Those unable to go by the school should call their child’s campus counselor.  It must be returned to the school counselor by November 3, 2017.
