HEALTH ADVISORY: High Influenza Activity

As you are aware, there is high influenza activity in Texas. Benavides ISD is taking every precaution to help prevent the spread of the flu within our schools. BISD is working with our custodial staff and Aramark to keep our students healthy and safe. Currently, the custodial staff is providing a special cleanser to fight infections to be utilized, daily, on the surfaces and door knobs of the building. Last Monday, the classrooms were thoroughly cleaned with these solutions after all students had been dismissed. The custodial staff are working diligently every evening to ensure the classrooms are cleaned for our students every morning.

Attached is a letter from the HEALTH Department with ways you as a parent can help prevent the flu.

Donation Collection for Elementary

Elementary Parents,

You have probably seen the images of destruction that Hurricane Harvey wreaked on numerous towns here in Texas. Our hearts go out to the victims who have been affected by this devastating storm. Therefore, Benavides Elementary would like to help out in some small way by donating supplies to the people in need.

Benavides Elementary will be accepting donations such as toiletries, clothing, blankets, towels, pillows, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, etc. These donations will be collected up until Friday of this week. Donations are voluntary but appreciated.

Thank you for your support of this great cause.

S. Perez,
Principal Benavides Elementary

Benavides ISD has received notification from T.E.A. that Benavides Elementary and Benavides Secondary will be designated as "Met Standard". In addition, Benavides ISD was also designated as "Met Standard".

T.E.A. has also released A-F grades for Texas school districts. Benavides ISD received a D.

This measurement is not indicative of the amount of hard work that our teachers and students put in all year long. It is not indicative of the talent and potential that is possessed in our district by our students, teachers, and community. Benavides ISD will continue to implement and work on initiatives and strategies that leads towards building and fostering our academic growth.

For explanation of how T.E.A. arrived at the calculations go to TXschools.org

Make-Up Day for Loss of Instruction Time

Attention Parents and Students:

House Bill (HB) 2610, passed by the 84th Texas Legislature, amends Texas Education Code (TEC), §25.081, by striking language requiring 180 days of instruction and replacing this language with language requiring districts and charter schools to provide at least 75,600 minutes of instruction, including intermissions and recess. The bill also allows school districts and charter schools to add minutes as necessary to compensate for minutes of instruction lost due to school closures caused by disaster, flood, extreme weather conditions, fuel curtailment, or another calamity.

In reviewing our records for the required 75,600 minutes for school, we find we are short 470 minutes to meet that requirement. May 18th, 2018 is a scheduled Tutorial/Attendance day. We will be using this day as our make-up day for the loss of the 470 minutes of instruction.

Friday, May18th will be a regular school day for all students.

Homecoming classes being honored are classes that follow continuously--- in honoring classes ending in 0 and 9 this is not the case. Therefore, this year, we are honoring three classes (graduating classes ending in 3, 4, and 5) so that we may move forward in the right direction.
In the future, classes being honored will be in the following order:   0 & 1’s, 2 & 3’s, 4 & 5’s, 6 & 7’s, 8 & 9’s.  Next year, we will begin with honoring the graduating classes ending in 6 & 7 with others following in succession
